Heat + Cold Recovery

Contrast Therapy

Your body was designed to recover. Most people just never slow down long enough for it to happen.

Contrast Therapy at Release combines heat, cold, breathwork, and nervous system regulation to help the body recover from modern stress more effectively.

Recovery is the ability to return to balance.

Heat and cold are the tools. Regulation is the real goal.

Why People Use Contrast Therapy

The body grows stronger through adaptation.

Heat and cold exposure create temporary physical stressors that the body must adapt to.

Many people use Contrast Therapy as part of wellness routines focused on recovery, circulation, resilience, stress adaptation, energy, and mental reset.

At Release, the experience is designed to feel intentional, calming, and restorative — not overwhelming.

What to know about Contrast Therapy.

What is Contrast Therapy?

Contrast Therapy is a recovery experience that alternates between heat and cold exposure — typically using an infrared sauna followed by a cold plunge.

The goal is to create a controlled temperature shift that challenges the body in a safe, structured way. Heat helps the body relax, sweat, and increase circulation, while cold exposure creates a brief stress response that may support recovery, alertness, and resilience. Together, the hot-cold cycle is designed to help you reset your body, calm your mind, and support your recovery routine.

Contrast Therapy works by alternating between two opposite temperature exposures. Heat generally causes blood vessels to widen, a process called vasodilation, while cold causes blood vessels to narrow, a process called vasoconstriction.

This back-and-forth shift is often described as a “vascular pump.” It may help support circulation, muscle recovery, nervous system regulation, and inflammation balance. It also creates a mental resilience practice, because learning to stay calm during cold exposure can help train breath control and stress response.

Many guests use Contrast Therapy as part of a wellness routine focused on recovery, stress regulation, energy, mental clarity, and overall resilience.

Common wellness goals include:

  • Supporting muscle recovery after workouts
  • Helping with post-exercise soreness
  • Supporting circulation
  • Feeling refreshed, clear, and energized
  • Supporting relaxation and stress reset
  • Building cold tolerance and resilience
  • Creating a consistent recovery ritual

Individual experiences vary. Contrast Therapy is best viewed as a supportive wellness and recovery tool, not a treatment for any medical condition.

Most guests describe Contrast Therapy as both calming and invigorating. The sauna portion feels warm, grounding, and relaxing. The cold plunge feels intense at first, especially for beginners, but the session is short and guided.

You may notice your breathing change when you first enter the cold water. Our team will help you slow your breath, stay present, and ease into the experience safely. Many guests leave feeling refreshed, clear-headed, and more balanced.

A typical Contrast Therapy session may last 30–60 minutes depending on the format, your comfort level, and your goals.

A common beginner-friendly rhythm is:

  • Sauna: 10–15 minutes
  • Cold plunge: 30 seconds to 2 minutes
  • Rest: 2–5 minutes
  • Repeat as tolerated

More experienced guests may gradually build toward longer cold exposure or additional rounds, but more is not always better. The goal is a safe, effective reset — not pushing past your limits.

Most guests start with heat first. Beginning in the sauna helps warm the body, relax the muscles, and prepare you mentally before entering the cold plunge.

Some guests prefer to finish with cold for an energized, alert feeling, while others prefer to finish with heat for relaxation. Our team can help you choose the best flow based on your goals, comfort level, and experience with cold exposure.

Cold plunge temperatures vary by studio and protocol, but many wellness settings use water in the range of approximately 45–60°F.
Beginners do not need to start at the coldest temperature or stay in for a long time. Shorter exposure can still be effective, especially when paired with controlled breathing and a gradual build in tolerance over time.

Contrast Therapy is best used consistently, but not excessively. Many guests start with 1–3 sessions per week depending on their goals, schedule, training intensity, and how their body responds.
If you are using Contrast Therapy after intense exercise, timing matters. Cold exposure immediately after strength training may reduce some of the normal inflammation signals involved in muscle adaptation, so some guests may prefer to wait a few hours after heavy lifting before doing a cold plunge-focused session.

Contrast Therapy is generally well tolerated when performed appropriately, with proper screening, hydration, temperature control, and guidance.
Because heat and cold both place stress on the cardiovascular system, safety matters. Potential risks may include dizziness, dehydration, overheating, cold shock, fainting, blood pressure changes, or cold-related discomfort. Our team guides timing, transitions, and exposure so the session feels challenging but controlled.
You should stop immediately and notify our team if you feel lightheaded, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, numbness, confusion, severe discomfort, or anything that does not feel right.

You should check with your physician before using Contrast Therapy if you are pregnant, have heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, circulation problems, a history of stroke, fainting episodes, severe Raynaud’s syndrome, cold allergy, nerve damage, seizure disorder, severe anemia, kidney disease, fever, active infection, open wounds, or any serious or unstable medical condition.
If you are under active medical care, taking medications that affect blood pressure, circulation, hydration, or temperature regulation, or have a complex health history, we recommend medical clearance before starting.

Before your session, arrive hydrated and avoid alcohol or heavy meals. Bring or wear swimwear, and plan to move slowly between heat, cold, and rest.
After your session, we provide chilled eucalyptus towels and dry towels so you can cool down, dry off, and feel refreshed before returning to your day. Rehydrate, listen to your body, and give yourself a few minutes to return to baseline. Some guests feel energized after finishing with cold, while others feel deeply relaxed.

Release offers Contrast Therapy as a wellness and recovery service. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.
Contrast Therapy may support recovery, circulation, relaxation, and resilience as part of a broader wellness routine, but it should not be used as a substitute for medical care. Individual experiences vary, and guests with medical conditions should consult their healthcare provider before use.
Important Note
Contrast Therapy is a wellness and recovery service. Individual experiences vary. Guests with medical conditions, pregnancy, heart or blood pressure concerns, circulation issues, cold sensitivity, heat intolerance, fainting history, or complex health histories should consult their healthcare provider before use.
